Dane had left the band by 1987, but that
didn't stop David and Jeff from showing Houston that The Judy's were
far from over. A sold out concert at Numbers on lower
Westheimer brought Judy's fans more than an unforgettable show! That
night, The Judy's brought forth a limited edition 7" single called
"Girl Of 1000 Smells" (in two languages), as well as two new members, and David Bean's first "pocketguide" entitled "A Guide To Good Odors". Joining the band that night were Scott Krchnak on sax, keyboard, guitar and vocals, and Matthew McCarthy on drums and vocals. This was the only Judy's recording these two guys would appear on. They left the group shortly after the single was released.
Some groups might have released a project like this as just another 7" single, but not The Judy's. The vinyl version of Girl Of 1000 Smells was packaged with care, no doubt by hand, in a plain white box (the kind usually used for 1/4 inch reel-to-reel tape). Each 33RPM single (pressed on white vinyl) also came with it's own scent! When you opened the box to remove the record, you were greeted by one of four possible odors (I got strawberry)! Fortunately, the record lived on long after the scent had dissipated.
The flip side of the record contains a rendition of Girl of 1000 Smells performed entirely in Russian It's even funnier to read how the song translates back into English. The cassette version brought even more bonuses: an extended dance mix, and a bonus edit version of the 6-minute epic.
Appropriately enough, 1000 copies of the vinyl version of this offering were pressed. Each one was carefully numbered on the spine of the box (I got number 178).
It's strange how certain things, seemingly trivial at the time, can
stand out in your mind so vividly after a number of years. Wearing this godawful white shirt with little black palm trees on it, I remember walking up to the merchandise table after the concert. I was drenched from head to toe with sweat and Guyana Punch. David's father was working the merchandise table that evening. At the end of the show, upon handing David Bean Senior my 5 bucks for the record, I remember incoherently babbling something about what a talented and cool son he had. To this day, I still wonder if that's the best I could have come up with. I also remember stepping on the scales the next morning to find that I had lost eight pounds the night before. Just think of all that money I could have saved on NutriSystem if I could have attended a few Judy's concerts every week!
