David Bean - Modomusic

Late in 1982, The Judy's began recording a follow-up to their hit release, Washarama. However, due to personal committments of the band members (namely college), The Judy's actually ended up going on hiatus until 1985. With a new record halfway finished, and Judy's fans still clamoring for new material, David Bean decided to bring in some close friends to finish the project and ended up releasing Modomusic as a solo album. This, no doubt, is why Modomusic contains a couple of tracks remembered as favorites from The Judy's live shows.

Joining David on the completion of the record were some friends from another Houston, Texas based party-band known as The Dishes. In fact, somewhere around this era, David actually played a number of live shows with The Dishes. While never being an official member of The Dishes, David did make some lasting friendships that came in to play in The Judy's last days as a group (after Jeffrey and Dane had left the band). The Dishes' keyboardist Barbara Donaho joined The Judy's on several dates late in The Judy's days together.

Houston session player Billy Block, Jimmy Raycraft of The Dishes (and later Jimmy and the Thin Men) fame, and Dan Yeaney (who at last count owned his own recording studio in the Champions/1960 area of town where Jeffrey Walton once worked with a post-Judy's band called Punch) all helped finish Modomusic. Assisting in production were Steve Ames (The Judy's faithful producer) and Dickie Malone (bassist for The Dishes, and in the later days of The Judy's, their manager).

One of the most unique aspects of this release was that it was issued in three different color schemes. The cardboard jackets had identical artwork, except for the fact that the color was changed. The releases came in pink, light blue, and yellow flavors.

Modomusic was released in late 1983 on David's custom Wasted Talent record label (JWT3517).

Because of David's live stints with The Dishes, his release of a solo album, and Jeffrey Walton's release of his solo project (entitled Danger Boy), many speculated that The Judy's were finished as a group. Thankfully, this wasn't true, as Modomusic actually served as something to tie-over Judy's fans between the release of the Washarama and Moo projects.
